Stepping Back Into Photography: Honoring Grief Through the Lens

Writer: Jenna LakeJenna Lake

After a long pause, I am stepping back into the world of photography with a renewed sense of purpose and a deepened understanding of the sacred nature of this work. My focus is on women—their stories, their transformations, their raw and unfiltered truths. This journey begins with a deeply intimate and emotionally profound session: one that honors grief.

“Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.” – Jamie Anderson

Grief is a chapter in life that often feels isolating, overwhelming, and unseen. Yet, within it lies immense beauty—an authenticity that strips away all pretense and reveals the core of who we are. As a photographer, I am not just capturing images; I am holding space for the emotions that arise, for the vulnerability, and for the courage it takes to be witnessed in those moments.

This first session back is not about masking sorrow with a forced smile; it is about embracing the wholeness of grief—the tenderness, the anger, the love that remains, and the transformation that follows. It is about allowing a woman to see herself in her fullness, even in the midst of loss, and honoring the depth of her experience.

Holding space in this way is an honor. It requires presence, deep listening, and an ability to translate emotion into visual poetry. It is about creating an environment where every tear, every sigh, every quiet gaze is met with reverence. My intention is to capture not just the pain but the strength that coexists with it—the beauty of a woman standing in her truth, allowing herself to be fully seen.

This session is just the beginning. It sets the tone for the kind of photography I am stepping into—a space where women can come as they are, in any stage of their journey, and be met with acceptance, love, and artistry that reflects their essence.

To those who find themselves in this chapter of grief: you are not alone. Your journey is worthy of being witnessed. And when you are ready, I am here to capture the beauty of your story.

With deep gratitude, I want to thank the soul who trusted me to capture her story. It is a privilege to hold space for such depth and truth, and I am honored to have been a witness to her journey.
